Spinoza: Let me clarify by noting stating that the law of Moses, although it was not universal, but entirely adapted to the disposition and particular preservation of a single people, may yet be called a law of God or Divine law, inasmuch as we believe that it was ratified by prophetic insight. The Divine law I referred to previously it truly universal or common to all men. Furthermore, it is not dependent on the historical narrative of the Scripture whatsoever. Divine law is comprehended solely by human nature. Wisdom or intellect alone teaches us to fear God as it is written: “If thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding…then shall thou understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God; for the Lord giveth wisdom; out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” Everyone can by the light of nature clearly understand the goodness and the eternal divinity of God, and can thence know and deduce what they should seek for and what to avoid.
